Learning to save seals

The NPWS Marine Wildlife Team worked with Taronga Zoo to train our Park Operations staff and supporting partners in stranded seal assessment, capture and transport.

The first workshop gave our Greater Sydney and South Coast Branch marine wildlife responders the chance to learn and get hands-on with equipment, strategies and techniques to assess and capture seals that need help or transport to a rehabilitation facility.

Getting up close and personal with ‘Charlie’ the large adult sea lion was a highlight of the day, who was used to demonstrate some finer points about his smaller fur seal cousins that NPWS are more likely to capture. Seal identification, behaviour and capture of a live animal were all covered.

A big thanks to Taronga Zoo who went the extra mile by specially training Charlie with some new behaviours, tailored for display at our workshops.

The training is funded by MEMA as part of the NSW Marine Estate Management Strategy initiative to reduce impacts on threatened and protected species.
