Commercial fishers and partners are working with the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Fisheries and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service to come up with ways to reduce whale entanglements and deliver best practice sustainable fisheries.

A workshop was held at Sydney Fish Market as part of the East Coast Whale Entanglement Mitigation project.

The group discussed the latest gear trial results and worked together to discuss experiences with different gear types and options moving forward.

The project is supported by the Marine Estate Management Strategy and OceanWatch Australia, through funding provided by the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program, and Professional Fisher’s Association’s Australian Government Marine Park Fisheries Assistance Extension Program.
