Marine wildlife reporting milestone

Historical data included in reporting system

A total of 1236 historical marine wildlife records have been added to the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) reporting system, reflecting the work of rescue and rehabilitation groups all along the NSW coast. This brings the total number of marine wildlife records to 6083.

An online data base called Elements is used by NPWS to record for all marine wildlife events and sightings across NSW. NPWS can study the data and look for patterns in species health and distribution now that all marine wildlife events in NSW are in one system.

The 2020 trial of shared marine wildlife reporting has been a huge success. To date, four marine rescue and rehabilitation groups are working with NPWS to add data into Elements:

  • Dolphin Marine Conservation Park
  • Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA)
  • SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium
  • Sea World.
