Narooma Oyster Festival 2022
Live sea urchins, shore crabs, oyster shells and a pied oyster catcher.
These are some of the marine wildlife community members had a chance to get up close and personal with at the NSW Marine Estate and Marine Parks stand at the Narooma Oyster Festival 2022.
The day was a great opportunity to engage with the South Coast community about the different projects funded under the Marine Estate Management Strategy that are working to improve the health of our marine estate.
There was great interest in the Oyster Reef Restoration Project. 99% of shellfish reefs in NSW have been lost since European settlement due to impacts such as historical overharvesting of oysters and oyster shell, disease and poor water quality.
The NSW Oyster Reef Restoration Project, funded under the Marine Estate Management Strategy, aims to restore shellfish reefs in several locations across NSW, starting with a pilot project in Port Stephens and expanding into Wagonga Inlet, Narooma in 2022.
