Bringing endangered seagrass into the classroom

Did you know that six populations of Posidonia australis are listed as endangered in NSW?

This seagrass species is part of a thriving ecosystem in our estuaries and plays a critical role in keeping our waterways clean and reducing greenhouse gases.

The Department of Primary Industries, with funding from the Marine Estate Management Strategy, has released an activity-based educational booklet about Posidonia australis targeted at school-aged children in Years 5 and 6.

The booklet aligns with the NSW school curriculum and includes an associated teacher’s resource to guide teaching.

Students will experience life in a seagrass meadow without leaving the classroom.

The fun activities in the booklet will encourage critical thinking and inspire students to play an active role in protecting Posidonia australis and other seagrasses.

The documents are freely available to download. You can also request printed copies by emailing fisheries.threatenedspecies@dpi.nsw.gov.au.
