Students get hands-on with Aboriginal culture

Aboriginal Elders share knowledge with students

Primary school students from six NSW south coast schools will get a hands-on experience of Aboriginal culture during a series of workshops.

Paul Brown from the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) said the workshops would help students understand how Aboriginal people have cared for Sea Country in their area for many generations.

“Aboriginal community elders and Sea Country Rangers from local Aboriginal land councils will share stories and demonstrate traditional food gathering and preparation techniques,” Mr Brown said.

More than 200 Year 5 students from 14 primary schools on the NSW south coast will participate in the workshops before the end of the year.

“We hope to expand the workshops to schools along the entire NSW coast in 2020 and 2021,” Mr Brown added.

The workshops are an initiative under the NSW Marine Estate Management Strategy (2018-2028).
