How genetics can protect kelp forests from global warming

Dr Melinda Coleman holding up deep green kelp

What does pine pollen at Yosemite National Park in California have in common with the kelp forest of southern Australia?

Read climate change researcher Dr Melinda Coleman’s story at the Great Southern Reef Foundation website to find out.

Dr Coleman is a marine biologist.  She is also a kelp and seaweed expert leading the DPI Fisheries Climate change research team.

She has been researching the genetics of kelp to help save this cool water species as our coastal waters warm due to climate change.

With her expertise in next-generation DNA sequencing technologies and a deep passion for marine ecosystems, she is paving the way for innovative research and conservation strategies.

Check out this fascinating read to learn more about this Marine Estate Management Strategy funded project.

Thanks, Great Southern Reef Foundation for the write up on one of our top researchers!
