New videos highlight opportunities for Aboriginal people on Sea Country

There are now more than 20 new ways to explore opportunities for Aboriginal people to be involved in Sea Country management with the release of the NSW Sea Country Marine Estate YouTube playlist.

Each of the short 2-5 minute videos show ways DPI Fisheries is working with Aboriginal communities across the NSW coast to increase participation in managing their Sea Country.

With titles like Training to dive on Sea Country and Becoming a skipper on Sea Country, the videos showcase the stories of Aboriginal participants across the NSW coast involved in these programs.

Aboriginal Project Officer Kelly Gittins has been involved in the production of many of the videos.

She said the Sea Country videos are great viewing for anyone wanting to know more about the Sea Country programs.

“We've got videos on everything from Sea Country cultural camps to our marine skills training program, to some of our Sea Country ranger programs,” she said.

“From Tweed Heads to Tathra, from Byron Bay to Batemans Bay, so many communities have been involved in creating this great Sea Country video resource.”

“If you’re an Aboriginal person and think you might be interested in gaining the skills for a career in marine industries, then these videos are definitely worth a look.”

Ms Gittins said the Sea Country videos give viewers a window into how important Sea Country is to Aboriginal communities up and down our coast.

"It's wonderful to hear the stories of participants across the coast. For instance, you can find out from participants what training involves and what it has meant for them to gain the skills to be employed on Sea Country.”

Lexene Busbridge features in the video Surveying life underwater on Sea Country sharing her experience undertaking her commercial dive licence.

She said the training program was a great way to reconnect with her Country.

“An opportunity like this is something I've always dreamed of - to be able to get back to my roots, get back to my Country or underwater Country,” she said.
