Dairy farm changes to create a cleaner coastal catchment

Farmer Will Russell is transforming his family’s dairy business to boost productivity and sustainability. His focus is on improving farm practices to protect water quality in nearby creeks, rivers and estuaries.

Mr Russell has shared his transition to better water and fertiliser management in this video filmed near Bega on the NSW south coast.

South East Local Land Services (LLS) and the Clean Coastal Catchments (CCC) Research project have been working with Mr Russell to upgrade his irrigation technology and improve farm fertiliser management decisions, strategies that will flow through to a cleaner coastal catchment.

“There is the area we use to be a productive dairy business, and there's equally an area that we protect for the environment," Mr Russell said.

"But also, we need to be as efficient as possible with our water management and fertiliser management to make sure we're growing efficient pastures and efficient crops, so that we can run a really profitable dairy business.”

Watch the video to find out about Mr Russell’s ideas on sustainable dairy farming that can flow through to better water quality downstream or read more on the CCC Research project website.

This project was funded by the NSW Government under the Marine Estate Management Strategy.

The ten-year Strategy was developed by the NSW Marine Estate Management Authority to coordinate the management of the marine estate.
