Dewatering and Fish Relocation wraps up Fish Friendly Council video series

DPIRD Fisheries has released the eighth and final video in a series of Fish Friendly videos on best practice when working in and around waterways.

The latest video, Dewatering and Fish Relocation, highlights the importance of planning for fish relocation to avoid harm to aquatic species. The video outlines how to safely manage dewatering activities, maintain water quality, and ensure fish habitat is not adversely affected.

Dewatering is often necessary for construction or maintenance projects within or near waterways, however it can have a significant impact on water quality and aquatic life if not managed properly.

The video outlines effective techniques for reducing sedimentation, protecting fish and managing discharge water.

The safe and ethical relocation of fish is a key focus for projects that require dewatering. Careful planning is important and engaging a qualified aquatic ecologist is recommended for fish relocation activities.

Best practice includes identifying appropriate relocation sites and using humane methods for fish capture and relocation to ensure healthy fish are moved to suitable habitats.

This Fish Friendly Councils video series delivers a comprehensive set of support materials to improve outcomes for native fish during works programs.

The videos provide an accessible resource to help Councils and contractors avoid and minimise impacts to fish and fish habitat when undertaking necessary instream maintenance and infrastructure projects.

The Fish Friendly Councils video series has been funded through the Marine Estate Management Strategy.
