The marine estate faces significant threats, as do many unique environments worldwide.
Key threats to the marine estate were identified and documented in an evidence-based threat and risk assessment, the Statewide Threat and Risk Assessment (TARA).
Both individually and cumulatively, threats negatively impact the environment, which in turn impact communities and economies.
They also impact our emotional wellbeing and mental health, disrupting our connection with nature and enjoyment of coastal areas.
Key threats to the NSW marine estate include:
- Urban stormwater discharge
- Agricultural diffuse-source runoff
- Litter, waste, debris and microplastics
- Coastal development
- Climate change
Estuaries (e.g. coastal lakes, harbours) are the most impacted environments on the NSW coast because of the intensity of our activities in and around these areas.
Our research tells us the threats that have the greatest impact on the NSW community include litter on shorelines or in the water, overcrowding, illegal behaviour or activities, climate change, loss of natural habitat and decline in wildlife.
