Ever wondered what a harvest strategy is, how it works and why it matters?

Our new series of short, easy-to-follow animations has the answers. You can watch them here: Harvest Strategy Resources

The videos are designed to give stakeholders the knowledge and tools to understand how harvest strategies are designed to provide sound fisheries management decisions, and how all stakeholders can be involved in their development and operation.

With a better understanding, stakeholders can collaborate effectively in the design and public consultation process, ensuring appropriate inclusion of commercial, recreational and Aboriginal fishing interests.

This helps develop harvest strategies that balance everyone's needs, provide benefits to all stakeholders, and protect fisheries resources for future generations.

The videos explain how each part of a harvest strategy works, how data and scientific assessments are incorporated, and how these elements work together to form a robust management framework for the sustainable and healthy management of fisheries resources.

Key concepts explored include:

  • harvest strategy objectives and indicators
  • reference points and decision rules
  • monitoring and assessment
  • fishery data
  • stock assessments
  • Total Allowable Catch (TAC).

Why it matters

A fishery harvest strategy is a plan that sets clear rules for managing a fishery and balancing objectives supporting the environment, economy and local communities.

It helps fishery managers, scientists, fishers and other stakeholders decide in advance how to respond to different situations in the fishery.

The main benefit of harvest strategies is to provide certainty and transparency to fisheries management decisions, so everyone knows how decisions will be made.

Harvest strategy development is led by DPIRD Fisheries and funded through the NSW Marine Estate Management Strategy.
